Fifteen young people have been rescued from the sea at Machaire Rabhartaigh in west Donegal.

It is understood they got into difficulty a short distance from the local beach there some time before 5pm.

A spokesperson from Malin Head Coast Guard said that ten people were taken by the Rescue 118 helicopter to University Hospital Letterkenny.

The coast guard unit from Mulroy, as well as a local boat, helped in the rescue mission.

The people were treated initially at the local community centre.

The Coast Guard said: “The operation was coordinated by the Malin Head Coast Guard Rescue Coordination Centre, who received a number of emergency calls reporting persons in difficulty off of the coast.

“On scene support was also provided by the Tory Ferry Queen of Aran and Mulroy Coast Guard Unit. All 15 casualties were rescued and ten were airlifted to Letterkenny Hospital by R118 Coast Guard Helicopter.”

A Coast Guard spokesperson said that this was a very lucky outcome and thanked the public for quickly alerting the emergency services.

“The helicopter crew deserve special commendation for their efficient response to a difficult challenge as do staff in Malin Head for coordinating an operation with a successful outcome,” they said.
